Non-hormonal Vaginal Atrophy Treatment -- Non-painful Sex Without Estrogen
by: Marja Sprock M.D., F.A.C.O.G. FPMRS board certified

Come to our open house on Tuesday March 22nd, 2016 from 4.30-6.30 PM to find out more.

Many menopausal or peri-menopausal women have noticed increasing vaginal dryness, irritation, burning, itching and pain with sex and sometimes urination. These are all symptoms of VVA: VulvoVaginal Atrophy. Quite effective treatments with estrogen are available; however, estrogen is not an option for some of us, or not desired by others. Women with breast cancer, some genital malignancies and others averse to the use of estrogen are without an effective option.

ERBIUM YAG LASER HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE AN EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR VAGINAL ATROPHY, FINALLY GIVING WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER A VIABLE OPTION

Women suffering from VVA are mostly sexually dysfunctional or less satisfied and have a significantly diminished quality of life.

Laser can reverse the effect of atrophy and less aggressive minimally ablative lasers as the Erbium Yag give better results than more aggressive ablative lasers.

Vaginal laser treatment like the Renovalase® increase the trophism or nutrition and metabolism of the vaginal tissue and reverse the effects of atrophy. First, an increased blood flow through vasodilatation increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients. Secondly the warming effect of the non-ablative (no tissue shedding or discharge) Erbium Yag laser will stimulate fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Elastin and collagen fibers will increase as well as the vascularization. The glycogen load and turnover of the vaginal tissue will improve, an effect which estrogen also accomplishes, however estrogen does not increase vascularization.

The way to improve VVA or vulvaginal atrophy is by improving the local estrogen levels or the blood flow in the affected area or very regular sexual intercourse. Laser not only increases the blood flow, but also increases elastin and collagen, contributing to mucosal elasticity. Laser may be the treatment of the future to treat VVA.

Treatment with the less aggressive non-ablative Erbium laser improves the vaginal tissue quality and effects last about a year after one treatment or longer.

Laura, 48 a breast cancer survivor became menopausal after chemotherapy. The use of Tamoxifen increased her vaginal atrophy, making it unpleasant to impossible to have intercourse. This put a strain on her relation and Laura has been looking for viable options to improve her vaginal tissue quality. After extensive research, she decided that the Erbium Yag laser was the most realistic option and presented to Central Florida UroGynecology. After 3 months and one treatment, she can only say that we saved her marriage. She knows she will likely be back in about a year, but it is well worth it. “It caused me no pain and was done very quickly; it took me a lot longer to research it”

VVA is usually associated with pain during intercourse, or inability to have intercourse. The erbium Yag Renovalase® laser is an in office painless procedure. If there is severe VVA, it may be slightly uncomfortable to introduce the laser speculum in the vagina, but some local anesthetic cream helps.

The improvement in vaginal tissue quality is noticeable up to 120 days and can last up to a year. This is a very exciting option for the millions of women who would like to be sexually active, but for whom estrogen is not a realistic or acceptable option.

The Erbium Yag laser is safe for the surrounding tissues and can restore your vagina without the use of estrogen. Reports show the less ablative the laser the more favorable the result, which makes the Erbium Yag the clear winner.

Increase in blood flow, glycogen content, collagen and elasticity without the use of vaginal estrogen with the Erbium Yag laser at Central Florida UroGynecology. Finally, we have a good option available for women with VVA without the use of estrogen.

Painless, in-office laser treatment for VVA, vulvovaginal atrophy, Central Florida UroGynecology is the most experienced vaginal laser center and an example to others.

We are excited for all the women who did not have a realistic option to treat VVA. Call for an appointment to discuss your Erbium, in-office laser treatment. Central Florida UroGynecology 321-806-3929 or check us out at www.CFUroGyn.com
